This comprehensive course is designed to equip learners with the skills necessary to excel in the field of welding, adhering to both national and international standards. The primary focus is on preparing individuals to join metal products through electric arc or gas welding processes in accordance with Welding Procedure Specifications. The curriculum covers a range of essential techniques, including cutting, gouging, and gas welding of ferrous materials, along with the production of fillet welds, plate welds, and pipe welds using various welding processes. This qualification addresses the urgent demand for skilled artisans in welding across diverse industries, such as manufacturing, mining, and petro-chemical, but also contributes to the economic development of the nation, particularly in crucial sectors like power supply.

What is an Occupational Qualification? An Occupational Qualification is a specialized certification, such as Electrician, Bookkeeper, Tax Professional, or Insurance Agent, that prioritizes hands-on learning and real-world work experience, often resulting in the attainment of a Red Seal. They consist of 3 parts;

PART1Theory Modules at AIE (any campus in hybrid format)
PART2Practical Modules in-workshop training at AIE Midrand campus
PART3Workplace Hours external placement in industry

Theory modules consist of the knowledge needed for subject specific modules before it is applied in the practical workshops. Theory modules are designed in a hybrid format, giving students the flexibility to choose between virtual participation through our online platform or attending them in person on campus.

Practical modules involve applying subject-specific knowledge in hands-on, high-quality workshops on campus, monitored and assessed by qualified instructors. Attendance in our workshop or an accredited equivalent is mandatory for these modules.

Workplace modules are conducted within the industry and typically span an 18-month duration. During this period, students gain invaluable industry experience and apply the knowledge acquired during their time at the institution. Student placements are done in partnership with the institution via recruitgraduates.co.za and other industry partners.

The journey to your RED SEAL: This is a Occupation Trade that requires a RED SEAL to practise as a designated Electrician as per article Occupational Certificate Article 26D (RED SEAL*)

The South African qualification for Welder is on par with 42 countries that align with the International Institute of Welding (IIW) guidelines on training and welding education.

The curriculum used by these international institutions has been emulated in the South African Qualification to allow learners to be functional and ready to cope with the working environment.

Admission Requirements

Grade 9 (Std 7) Certificate with a pass in Mathematics and Physical Science OR
N1 Pass (with mathematics and science) OR
Vocational or Further Education Certificate at any level OR
Recognition of prior learning through an RPL process

IMPORTANT: If you don't meet our minimum entry requirement, you can still apply for special admission, regardless of what formal education you have. Please note that there are terms and conditions for this application, and all approvals will be made at the discretion of Academic Board.

Regulatory Information

Qualifying for external assessment: In order to qualify for an external assessment, learners must provide proof of completion of all required modules by means of statements of results and work experience.

An external integrated summative assessment, conducted through the relevant QCTO Assessment Quality partner is required for the issuing of this qualification. The external integrated summative assessment will focus on the Exit Level Outcomes and associated assessment criteria.

The external assessment model requires that the external assessment will be conducted through practical task at an accredited trade test centre. The examination and practical tasks will be concluded at an accredited assessment centre and marked by registered assessors. The trade test will be conducted over a period of two working days.
